3 Stars - An overlong but romantic drama that's a bit different than Conrad's other works. This has a bit of an F. Scott Fitzgerald flair (though Gatsby came later in a different setting). Conrad's writing style is a bit wordier here, more emotional and full of character thoughts instead of actions. The suspense does kick up later in the story but it's very slow paced. The hero is relatable though, living the introvert dream. On his own island, living off millions, and contemplating society's issues from the safety of his isolation. Until a crew of crooks come to his island to hunt treasure. The heroine Alma/Lena is sympathetic. She's a young girl who can't seem to catch a break, even when she manages to start falling in love and living on the island. A hard classic to read but plenty to enjoy in the details.
