3 Stars - Even though I didn't plan to get into another set of Jack Ryan series authors, the plot description for this one pulled me in because I had finally just read The Hunt for Red October. A bit unthinkable as much as I have loved other later books in the series. The timing convinced me to try it, and I'm not sorry I did. Andrews & Wilson butchered the Charley Castillo series entry a few years ago but their take on Jack Ryan was at least true to form. They're bringing nothing original to it but didn't hurt much. The problem is that this isn't so much a tribute to Red October as it is a replica, with Katie in Jack's place. I liked Katie but she lacked her own personality in a way Jack Jr. never seemed to in his early books. There was a lot of telling instead of showing and plenty of military jargon. But at least it was an entertaining revisitation for die hard fans of the series.
