The Man Who Would Be King

By Rudyard Kipling

Release Date: January 1888

Audiobook Available from WV Reads!

3 Stars - This was a little dry for such a short story and I struggled at times to follow. But there's no denying it's a quirky and interesting tale about power, friendship, and exploration. There's even a bit of humor mixed in. The narrator of the audiobook was solid if not very memorable. The actual POV narrator felt unreliable. Not in the way that he wasn't honest or likable. But literally unreliable. The plot is simple enough and so is the little lesson involved. How it skipped and jumped around was confusing though. And while Kipling's descriptions are always thoughtful and at times beautiful at times they bogged things down. A quick but not easy read if looking to fill an afternoon or a reading assignment. I confess I didn't stick with the rest of the collection after this one since I didn't enjoy it as much as other collections like The Jungle Book.
