Ready for another resume tip sure to please your prospective employer? We've got another little piece of resume writing advice just waiting for you.
Resume Tip #48 - Proofreading is Important
Now, you're thinking... that's obvious. However, a lot of people these days rely entirely on spell check and AI to write their resumes. And one might be surprised how obvious the mistakes that can lead to are. Your potential next employer does not want to hire someone who rushed through making a resume. They think what else might they rush through and make mistakes?
Proofreading even after spell check and editing is very important. Not only do you want to ensure your resume has stayed one-page with neat margins and sections, but that the word choices and spellings are correct. Most editing software, particularly the cheap or free versions, cannot tell when you've chosen an incorrect word. For example, you may have meant to type "sense" when you accidentally typed "cents". And spell check only knows that the word is spelled correctly in the dictionary, not that it's spelled incorrectly to the reader.
It's also possible that in a quick proofread you catch something like years typed incorrectly. Maybe you meant to put that you worked at a clothing store from 2001-2015. But, you typed 2010-2015 by mistake. Spell check cannot identify this error for you! And you could have shaved off nearly a decade of employment and work experience just in a simple typo.
So, in summary, be sure to give your resume a good final read-through before uploading it or turning it over to your future employer. It could make all the difference!
We hope if you're updating your resume as a new year's resolution or seeking a new job to start 2025, you'll check back in with us next year when we return! In the meantime, remember the local library is always a great place to work on your job search.
