We're glad you checked in! We've returned with a new short & sweet tip for making your resume stand out and hopefully earn you that new job.
Resume Tip #45 - Stay on Topic
This is a tip that applies generally and specifically on your resume. Generally, you want to stay on topic which is what qualifies you for the job you're applying for or makes you an excellent candidate.
A lot of newer and default resume templates encourage you to express your personality on your resume, and while that's a great concept, it's easy to get sidetracked. A resume is not an online profile. It may be tempting to put your profile tags from social media like "Mom. Survivor. Movie Buff." after your name at the top of the page, but that's not professional. Your potential employer doesn't need to know about your life history or hobbies on your resume, though they may come up in your interview and that's totally fine!
As for specifically staying on topic, when you are describing your current or previous job position, be sure to stick with tasks and duties you truly accomplished under that description. Don't add things that you may have done at other job positions. And do not try to work in outside and/or irrelevant experiences. For example, if you are applying to a retail clothing store position, and you apply for another one, there's no need to mention you once worked as a seemstress or tailor. Unless of course the job would require you to make alterations on garments for customers, such as a wedding or formal attire store.
We hope you'll remember to check back next month and that your local library is a great place to work on your job search!
